Our PSSR Coffee Machine Examination

It has been a legal requirement since 2000 to conduct a thorough PSSR boiler check on your coffee machine every year, and failure to do so may void warranty and invalidate your insurance.

Both liquids and gases can be described as fluids which may exert a vapour pressure. Coffee machines have a working temperature of around 100 degrees Celsius and above, which means that they fall within the terms of this law.

Continued use of an espresso coffee machine fitted with a steam boiler without such testing will put you in breach of the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations of 2000, and this will invalidate any comprehensive insurance claims in relation to incidents involving that machine.

Coffee boilers which have a pressure vessel, such as cappuccino makers, cause steam and are therefore liable to the requirements of PSSR laws. Get in touch with us if your machine is due for its certification. This is a statutory requirement and ensures the safety of the pressure system inside your coffee making equipment.

Under the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations of 2000 you have a statutory duty to meet the requirements of this law if you have a coffee machine which is over 14 months old. This is a risk that you will certainly wish to avoid.

This law requires that all pressure systems need to be inspected according to a Written Scheme of Examination. This is to prevent serious injury as a result of stored energy hazard. These regulations apply to user and owners of any system which contains any relevant fluids, including steam, gas under pressure and any fluids which are kept under pressure artificially and can take on gaseous form when they are released into the air.

Upon completion of the inspection, your own report will be ready online at any time and with your complete access.

The law states that coffee machines are classified as pressure vessels, and this means that they come within the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations of 2000. If your machine is not compliant and there is an incident involving your machine then the insurance may be void and you may face civil legal proceedings or even criminal charges.

Our PSSR Examination includes

  • Strip the coffee machine down completely by an engineer (the independent inspector cannot dismantle the machine or perform work on it).
  • Drain the boiler, removing the heating element for inspection.
  • Inspector, if requested/required to be there (usually recommended by the insurance company of the business) will then inspect the boiler thoroughly, and its safety valve.
  • When the inspector has completed the examination, the engineer will then reassemble your coffee machine and then ensure it is in full working order.
  • The coffee machine will be tested at its full pressure (between 1.1 and 1.9 Bar) to ensure its safety valve is working properly and opens at the correct working pressure.
  • Having completed this, the inspector will give you a PSSR Test Certificate to indicate that your coffee machine has passed the test.
  • If your coffee machine fails, for any reason at all, and repairs cannot be made within the allocated testing period (for example, if a spare part is needed which is not available) a further inspection will need to be arranged; the machine must not be used until it has passed this test.
